Reply Mail (BRM) is
a service that allows mail pieces to be returned
to your department without prepayment of postage
by the sender. Postage, sorting fees and return
fees are charged against a pre-established
shortcode. Only mail that is returned is charged
these fees. This service requires an automation-
compatible envelope or sticker printed on the
mail piece.
University Mail Services maintains and funds a BRM Permit #1100 for the general
use of University departments. Use of Permit #1100 is simple and requires only
two steps:
- Contact
Mail Services at (734) 764-9227 to request
a University BRM Code.
Provide the following information:
- Department Name
- Contact Name
- E-mail Address
- Phone Number
- Street Address
- Building / Room / Campus ZIP
- Shortcode for Postage Charges
- Have the BRM Code printed on your mail
piece.

| Note:
May 14, 2007 the Postal accounting
fee ($550 per year) was eliminated and
replaced by the sliding Mail
Services sorting fee. The Mail
Services fee is
capped at $525.00, so users
will not incur extra expenses
for this service. Most
users will see a substantial
reduction in their BRM expenses. |

Costs
associated with the BRM process include actual
First Class return postage, a $.08 per piece
USPS handling fee, and a Mail Services sorting
fee. Return mail is consolidated at Mail Services
and delivered directly to your department on
a daily basis. Charges for use of the BRM service
will appear directly on your department's monthly
Service Unit Billing.
Design standards for BRM include many special
requirements such as Facing Identification
Marks (FIMs), unique ZIP + 4, specific barcodes, and areas of special wording.

In addition, Printing
Services is acquainted with the BRM and
can process your printing requests. They
will automatically forward proofs of your
BRM to Mail Services for final approval.
If you choose another printing source, please
include Mail Services in the
proofing process before the printing is complete.
This could save you costly reprints should
your BRM not conform to postal regulations.
Mail Services maintains an inventory of generic #9 BRM envelopes
that can be economically imprinted for small BRM projects or last minute
rush jobs. Contact Mail Services for details.
